The Brighton Festival continues to grow each year, with its sensational programme of art, theatre, dance, music, literature and family shows. Guest Artistic Directors have feautred from 2009 with Aung San Suu Kyi, Anish Kapoor and Brian Eno filling this role in previous years. 21 Dec - Burning the Clocks - Winter Solstice Parade

The dark grip of long wintry nights is broken by a flicker of light... Started in 1993, Buring the Clocks represents an alternative to the commercial Christmas. Thousands of people gather to make papaer and willow lanterns to carry through the city and burn on the beach as a token for the end of the year and to greet the lengthening days. www.burningthclocks.co.uk
